How to motivate your children to want to help.

Children are highly motivated creatures and, by nature, thrive on validation and praise. Sometimes, instead of praise, we approach the habit of thoughtless, empty, manipulative praise.

We try to change this habit into something worthwhile. But changing habits requires a lot of patience and positive reinforcement. Sometimes you’re so busy that your brain gets used to saying, good job. It can be hard to think of something “right” to say.

So I’ve compiled a list of compliments and compliments that you can use the next time your child comes to you with something praiseworthy. If you read this, they will be in the back of your mind and you will be able to do something creative around it and explain it to your minis. When they have done something to help you, say thank you and explain why you are. grateful for your child’s action.

Thanks for bringing my phone when it rang. Thank you for choosing the clothes this morning, it makes it so much easier for me. Thank you very much when you go for a glass of water, instead of asking for one. Thank you for putting on your mask, we can go to the park now.

When doing an activity with them, make observations based on facts; congratulate them on what you see, try to be neutral here so that your child is not greatly influenced by your comment / compliance.

Wow! You made a unicorn, you made it all by yourself. Amazing. You drew the circle for the Earth very small. We did this together, it was exciting! It took a while, but you did. You have made the house very colorful.

Encourage their thinking process and extend learning by asking questions. How did you find out? You painted the tree, what next? Can you tell me more about the elephant you drew with wings? What is your favorite part of doing this activity?

How did you come up with this? Express your emotions in words, to help them understand your feelings. I love when you help your sister with homework.

You make me very proud when you help others. I will love you unconditionally, no matter what. See how happy your friend is when you share your toys with him. You haven’t stopped even when it gets tough, I’m so proud. You look so happy to have done that. You feel happy when you play football.

As they say, sometimes silence is gold. No need to applaud and praise everything. Sometimes it’s okay to sit back and watch our kids do their thing. Don’t say anything, just smile. Changing a habit is the first step to making a positive change in our personality. I hope these little tips help you bring about this change.
